New Generation Composer is available from ThingWorx 7.4 and later. Each subsequent release of ThingWorx will contain additional New Composer features/functionalities. This video is focused on the layout change and new features implemented from ThingWorx 7.4.     How to enable the new Composer? 1. In the top right-hand corner, click on the User Menu and select the Preferences option                Figure 1 2. Click the check box for Turn on New Composer Features. 3. Click Done. A New Composer link is added to the menu bar at the top of the Composer window.     Figure 2   4. I've been working with the 7.x and 8.x versions of Thingworx over the last several months doing integrations. So I have a few development instances I've been working with. I'd like to go over some of the issues I've encountered and provide some potential best practices around how you work with Thingworx in development mode and transition to production. Typically, I'll create an instance and develop the integration using the Administrator user which is the only user created as you start up Thingworx instances. Lately, I've been having trouble with a lot of authentication failures as I build. Problem number 1: The new User Lockout feature. Around 7.2 a new User Lockout feature was added to Thingworx to help prevent brute-force cracking of passwords. You now are allowed only so many authentication failures in a given period of time before the user is automatically put in lock mode for a number of minutes. Unfortunately, (but realistically in a more secure manner), a lockout appears as more authentication failures. In reality, it is because the user you have just successfully authenticated to has been automatically locked. I came very close to wiping out an entire instance because I just couldn't get signed in. Then I remembered the lockout, so I worked on something else for a while and then tried to get back into the server and I was successful because the lock timeout had expired. To see the settings in your system, look at the User Management Subsystem configuration page. The Account Lockout Settings default to 5 failures in a 5 minute period that will result in a 15 minute lockout. One note is that setting the lockout to 0 doesn't disable it, it permanently locks out the account. It will have to be reset by a member of the administrators group. The screenshot below shows Problem number 2: AppKeys There is a new setting in the PlatformSubsystem that by default prevents the use of AppKeys in a URL. This setting is present because it is more secure. If you use an appKey as a query parameter in a URL, the appKey will be logged as clear text in your web browser's access log. This is a security risk - an AppKey, especially one not using a whitelist setting might make it possible for someone to gain access to your system by managing to see the access log for your system (maybe via some log analysis tool you feed your logs to). You can disable this setting, but it is not recommended for production - you may have to for a while because you may have code that uses this technique that must be updated before you can enforce the policy. You should deal with this in your production systems as soon as practical. See the graphic below on where this setting shows up. Problem number 3: REST API testing ​As a Thingworx developer, you're probably aware of tools like Curl, Postman and even the Web Browser that can let you exercise a REST API as you develop your code so you can validate your functionality. The REST guidelines specify that you should use the GET method to retrieve data, PUT to create data, POST to update data, etc. The issue is that it is easiest to test an API call if you can execute it from a web browser. However, the web browser always uses the GET method to make a request. This means that PUT and POST (along with other methods) will not work from your browser. Thingworx originally interpreted the incoming request and would internally reroute incoming requests to the POST or PUT functionality. This is also insecure because it makes it too easy to execute services from a browser. A setting was added to the PlatformSubsystem allow for a gradual transition to the more secure configuration. Turn this on in developer mode to simplify your testing of REST calls, but you should not leave it on in production mode as it provides a potential attack vector for your server. So I have some recommendations: 1) Set up an additional Administrative user upon installation If you only have one user defined and it gets locked out, you're stuck until the lockout times out. Worse, if for some reason you set the timeout value to 0, you're locked out forever by Thingworx. You're only choice will be to hack the database to unlock the user or to wipe out the instance and start over. I just went through a situation where I did create the second user and forgot to add it to the Administrators group. So I did something else for 20 minutes to make sure the lockout had cleared. Then I added the user to the Administrators group but got distracted and never pressed the Save button so it locked up again. Make sure you have the user created and functional immediately upon installing the instance - don't wait until you're getting locked out by some loop that's not authenticating properly. Even if you were logged in as your Administrator user, the lockout will cause a failure the next time you try to do something in Composer, like turn off the lockout checkbox! 2) Test your REST Calls with Curl or Postman - not the web browser Don't test your code in a loop until you've tested it in isolation to be sure it's not going to fail authentication for some reason (which may include violating the PlatformSubsystem settings above). Don't use the browser to do the testing - it will require disabling the secure settings. Use Curl or even better, Postman or a similar tool to test your REST calls - it will give you better formatted output than Curl. And you can easily put appKey in as a header (where it should be) instead of a parameter on the URL or in the body. 3) Tighten up your appKeys where possible. Since an appKey is effectively a user/password replacement, you should protect them in the same manner - keep them out of log files by not allowing them as URL parameters, and use the whitelist to keep them from being used for other purposes. If you have a server to server connection, whitelist the server who will be making the calls to you. What I'm not sure of is just whether this is really IP addresses only or if you can use a DNS name and it will look up the IP address and insure it is in fact coming from the expected source. Someone else might be able to comment on this. 4) Test with the PlatformSubsystem settings off Make sure you can run your server without the method redirect or appKey as parameter settings in the PlatformSubsystem. Those settings are potential security vulnerabilities. You may find some Thingworx code that requires one or the other of those settings. Please be sure to report this through PTC Tech Support so it can be fixed.

Yes, the ThingWorx Manufacturing apps can be imported as ThingWorx extensions into an existing ThingWorx Platform install (v8.0.1). ThingWorx Manufacturing Apps are imported as a ThingWorx extension for all instances other than the Express and Developer Edition licenses. Note: If you ran the Express installer, you cannot import ThingWorx Manufacturing Apps as a ThingWorx extension. There are a few recommended troubleshooting steps to alleviate this: 1. The best practice is to install without an existing Tomcat implementation. Verify whether Tomcat is currently installed on this PC. If so, uninstall Tomcat and run the installer again. 2. Assign a different port for the servlet engine. This can be changed within the server.xml file located here: <Install path>\ThingWorxManufacturingApps\PTC_Servelet_Engine\conf\server.xml 3. If the installer has stopped at approximately 90% complete, and 5 minutes have elapsed, start the ThingWorx Servlet Engine Service manually from this directory in the Windows Explorer: <Install path>\ThingWorxManufacturingApps\PTC_Servlet_Engine\bin\thingworxServerw.exe 4. The Servlet Engine log files can be used for advanced troubleshooting. They are located in this directory by default: <Install path>\ThingWorxManufacturingApps\PTC_Servlet_Engine\logs

Follow these steps to restart the ThingWorx Server, then to verify that all install services are running: 1. Open the ThingWorx Server Properties configuration application. To locate this application in Windows Server edition operating systems, search for "Configure PTC Servelet Engine"; or the application can be launched from the Windows Explorer. The default install directory is: <ThingWorx install path>\ThingWorxManufacturingApps\PTC_Servlet_Engine\bin\thingworxServerw.exe 2. Use the controls in the General tab to Stop and then Start this service. 3. Now open the Windows Services console (services.msc) and verify these four services are installed and running:      a. When installing KEPServerEX, you will be presented with a tree of features to install. Open the pull-down menu next to "Full install" and select "Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive." This will ensure all needed drivers and plug-ins are included. When either a Client application has made a request of a Driver, or a Plug-in becomes activated, then a license check is performed. A license is not required to download and install KEPServerEX V6. After finishing the full install, all features of the KEPServerEX Configuration are available for setup and testing, including the ThingWorx Native Interface. When either a Client application makes a request of a Driver, or a Plug-in becomes activated, then a license check is performed. If a feature is not licensed, a two-hour demo countdown period will begin for that feature. There are System tags that can be monitored in KEPServerEX to determine which features are licensed, which are in a time-limited demo countdown period, and which have expired. To reset the countdown timer for an unlicensed feature, the KEPServerEX Runtime service can be stopped/restarted. See the links and steps below for more information. How do I download and install KEPServerEX?​ Monitor licensed, time-limited, and expired features in KEPServerEX:​ 1. Open the KEPServerEX Configuration window 2. The right-most icon in the Configuration icon toolbar is the white "QC" icon. Select this icon to launch a new OPC Quick Client window. The server project should automatically build 3. In the left pane, locate the _System folder 4. Within this folder locate the following three Tags, with the corresponding information displaying in the Value column: Tag (Item ID) Information displayed as a String in the Value column _System._ExpiredFeatures Any unlicensed driver or plug-in that has timed out _System._LicensedFeatures Drivers or plug-ins that are currently licensed for use with this install _System._TimeLimitedFeatures Any unlicensed driver or plug-in that is in demo mode, with the remaining demo timer countdown (in seconds) Note: The ThingWorx Native Interface does not require a KEPServerEX license. Restart the KEPServerEX Runtime service The KEPServerEX Runtime service (server_runtime.exe) runs in the background as a system service. Resetting this service will reset the demo countdown for any unlicensed feature. To reset the Runtime service: 1. Right-click on the Administration tool (the green EX icon in the Systray by the System Clock) 2. Select "Stop Runtime Service. 3. Either the user will be prompted to restart this service, or the same Administration tool menu can be used again to "Start Runtime Service"

Overview Time-series predictive models generated by ThingWorx Analytics Server in Analytics Manager will have additional columns in their dataShape generated by ThingPredictor. These columns are known as “transformation fields” and are used for internal processing but are not necessary for inclusion in the DataShape.  So there is no need to worry about mapping all these additional fields since it will be handled internally by ThingPredictor.  There is one addition step that the user must take which is detailed below. Step to Import: Edit the DataShape generated by ThingPredictor to match the format of the data that was provided during the model training process. In other words, remove all the transformation fields from the DataShape.

The KEPServerEX ThingWorx Native Interface was originally released with KEPServerEX v5.21 to enable connectivity with v6.6 of the ThingWorx Platform. Compatibility with the ThingWorx NextGen Composer (v7.4) was implemented with the release of KEPServerEX v6.1, while still allowing support of older ThingWorx composer versions through the Native Interface "Legacy mode" setting.   When connecting with ThingWorx v7.4 and newer, an Industrial Gateway thing template is configured in the NextGen Composer. The instructions for connecting KEPServerEX v6.1 (and newer) with ThingWorx v7.4 (and newer) can be found in the ThingWorx Help Center here:   KEPServerEX / ThingWorx Industrial Connectivity Connection Example (Expand ThingWorx Model Definition and Composer > Industrial Connections > Industrial Connections Example)     When connecting with versions of ThingWorx that are older than v7.4-- or if the older version of ThingWorx Composer will be used-- it will necessary to download and import the KEPServerEX Extension from the ThingWorx marketplace. The "RemoteKEPServerEXThing" thing template will then be used to allow connection with KEPServerEX. Here is a link to the extension download: ThingWorx IoT Marketplace   To enable Legacy Mode in KEPServerEX (v6.1 or newer, when connecting with versions of ThingWorx that are older than v7.4): 1. Open the KEPServerEX Configuration window 2. In the top-left Project view pane, right-click on "Project" and select "Properties" 3. Select the ThingWorx Property Group 4. Starting with ThingWorx Manufacturing Apps 8.1, a Connection Info box was added to Controls Advisor that will display the Configuration settings needed in KEPServerEX. In Controls Advisor, select the server instance you are connecting with, then select the Key icon Be sure the information displayed here matches the settings you have in place in your KEPServerEX Project Properties in the ThingWorx property group.

While it is not a requirement, it is a best practice to install KEPServerEX (v6.2 or higher) before installing ThingWorx (v8.0.1 or higher). If ThingWorx is already installed, close the application and complete the install of KEPServerEX by following these install instructions: How do I download and install KEPServerEX? Now, when you attempt to launch ThingWorx, if you are presented with a "null pointer exception" error, follow this workaround: 1. Navigate to the 'PostgreSQL\installer' directory, within the directory where the Manufacturing Apps are installed. By default this will be: <ThingWorx install path>\ThingWorxManufacturingApps\PostgreSQL\installer 2. Run the 'vcredist.exe' located there. This application should re-install the conflicting redistributables, and you should be able to launch ThingWorx again normally.

The .NET Framework versions 3.5 and 4.5 are required external dependencies. The ThingWorx Manufacturing Apps installer will prompt you to install these. For more information on the System requirements and External dependencies, see: Not authorized to view the specified document 3992 If you are a previous ThingWorx user, and are not using the full ThingWorx Manufacturing Apps installer, you will need to add these framework versions to the Windows operating system. An installer is available from the PTC App store for this purpose, or this can be done manually by following the instructions below. Note: both the .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.5 Frameworks are required. Do not install the .NET 3.5 Framework alone. Manually add the .NET 3.5/4.5 Framework to Windows: 1. Open the Windows Control Panel | select Programs and Features. 2. Select the option to "Turn Windows features on or off" 3. In Windows 7 (or other Standard editions), you can select the .NET framework from the list and follow the steps for installation. 4. In Windows Server 2012 (and other Server editions), select the option to "Add roles and features," then Next. For Installation type, select "Role-based or feature-based installation," then Next. Choose your server from the Server Selection menu, then Next. Then choose the framework versions and complete the install.
