Least Squares Method in PTC Mathcad

by Romeo Matei

least_square_method.png

About this worksheet:

  • Implements the least squares method to solve for coefficients in a 4th order polynomial
  • Implemented with the built-in regress function and can be applie in academia and cross any industry
  • Performs the least squares method, minimizes error, minimizes the sum of squares, finds the zero gradient, uses matrix manipulation, and linear algebra

Given a set of data, you can find the coefficients to a 4th order polynomial that would best represent the data.  To do this you can use the least squares method, as demonstrated in this worksheet using PTC Mathcad software.  You can define the function S as the sum of the residuals squared, and set the derivative of S yields a system of equations, which you can solve with linear algebra.

This worksheet displaying PTC Mathcad software is rich in mathematical content, providing you with an example data set, the polynomial function model, the least square method, and all equations and formulas you would need for solving.  Also included, are graphs, plots, and an example of how to solve using the Least Square method.

Download and explore this worksheet yourself! You can download a free lifetime copy of PTC Mathcad Express and get 30 days of full functionality.
