I do not usually stand on a moving escalator and go through it.
I want to pass the maximum number of steps. Up or Down!
What is the speed (steps per second) should I go?
One symbolic and numeric solution I need (from my students too) ![]()
PS
The largest escalator in the world is located in Moscow, at the metro station "Victory Park". Its length is 126 meters and height of 63.4 m.
Escalator speed - 45 meters per minute
The width of the steps of the escalator - 0.4 m
If you walk in a direction that's opposite to the movement of the escalator, and at the same speed as the escalator, you can walk until you collapse from exhaustion.
If I may, escalators are specially designed so that you don't walk them up or down !
Steps are intentionally awkwardly high to make it very unpleasant to walk. It is much higher than a standard stair step, which is an average comfortable height.
I am not sure why they do that, I think that every step you walk on an escalator might act as a load transient for the motors, which they don't really like.
So I guess escalator design engineers would be most grateful if you avoided walking up and down and just enjoyed the ride ![]()
Thanks Adrien and Richard but
