Sometimes XKCD is so accurate it makes me shudder.
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/academia_vs_business.pngThis one has happened to me so many times that I literally took my work back to academia. I did work on Accounts Receivable collection efficiency measures, but since it was not from the text books my boss wouldnt accept it. My boss told me it was an argument I wasn't going to win so I went back to University and submitted it as a thesis (with a lot more background research). The university gave me 1st class honours and the Chancellor's award for academic excellence saying that the dissertation was the quality of a Doctorate candidate.
Id be really interested to hear your stories about things you have come up with that business/others shrugged off that you KNOW was something special.
Also the number quoted in the comic was new to me. I looked it up and it seems nobody is quite sure who came up with it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_inverse_square_rootHow sad for the person who invented it. Like most things, it probably came about very early on and just got used and re-used. Anyone got the original angle reflection code from pong?
