Looked at the two definitions from a different standpoint and got a different answer.

If you ask people (pessemists and optimists) in Russia, how many will be 250 grams plus 250 grams, then you will get an answer - half a liter!

If you order 100 grams of brandy in a Russian restaurant, the waiter will bring you 100 milliliters of brandy.
If you order 100 milliliters of brandy, the waiter will refuse to you in the order - he thinks that you are already very drunk!
