"Buy" part interfacing with BOM's - question for advisors

Hello, we have a question for our manufacturers in this thread about "buy" parts.

Background:

As you know, we're developing capabilities to roll-up sustainability "life cycle inventory"  data in BOM's.  These well-informed BOM's can then call LCA software (Makersite, Ecoinvent, ...) to largely automate "life cycle impact analysis" and EPD's.  We're focusing on cradle-to-gate data first, but designing to expand to cradle-to-cradle later.

"Make" part data is fairly straight forward.  Material-level sustainability data rolls up to parts.  Footprint added during the manufacturing step.

"Buy" parts can be more complicated and variable.  Take an electronic capacitor as an example.  A supplier could provide sustainability data at the part level and/or material level (and even then with some limited sharing).  Long term, PTC thinks that Digital Product Passport level data in an Asset Administrative Shell format will be standard for supply chain data, which makes a BOM Manager's life much easier.  But for lower tier and smaller suppliers, this may take until the 2030's to realize.

Questions:

What's the real-world market condition for your "buy" part supplier data?

What sustainability attributes are they providing you today?

Which additional ones do you expect they will enhance for you over the next 2 years?

Do you need their material summaries to do effective LCA's?

Thank you for your insights!

Dave

Hello community, we have several new members - welcome!  The summer R&D work continues on BOM Roll Up and Material Management.  We'll have some asynchronous discussions (like this one about "buy" parts) to help inform our designs.  We also plan to have live sessions to discuss progress and decisions on the capabilities.  Summer months are tough for live discussions, so we'll record them for those on holiday.  We welcome your feedback on this post, and always feel free to open new posts for questions/topics important to you.
