As Ben said, there is no saving as for older versions, however Creo 2 should be able to open Creo 3 files using GCRI.  The instructions for use are here:

https://support.ptc.com/appserver/cs/view/solution.jsp?n=CS34964

If you don't have access to that link, you need to copy readnewermodels.dll file from the Creo 3 install here:

<Creo load point>\<datecode>\Common Files\<machine_type>\gcri

Paste the readnewermodels.dll file into your Creo 2 install here:

<Creo load point>\common files\<datecodes>\<machine_type>\obj\

I assume that will work for the student version like it does for the commercial.

Keep in mind, however, that you will not get the feature tree in Creo 2, only the geometry.

There is no option to save Creo 3 files in a format that Creo 2 can open.

Creo 3 can open older, Creo 2, files.
