I've only used the Git-Extension with Bitbucket but I think the process is similar.
Yes, you use the access token instead of your password as credentials. Your username is still the same. You have to create the access token within your GitLab account (and may add the needed privileges for this token).

I did create the token in by Gitlab account but I still cannot push or pull from my gitlab. I am also not getting any error message which makes it very difficult to trouble shoot.
