In short it is an IoT platform that allows you to architect and model real world entities in virtual entities/things. Which in turn allows you to gather, monitor & analyse variety data from several platforms/EDGE devices.
Depending upon your use case, you can model your IoT application without actual hardware if that's not available readily. You should be able to simulate the incoming data from the hardware and utilise that in your application.
