Desktop Integration in Windchill_10.1 M010

Windchill Desktop Integration (DTI) allows you to perform Windchill actions on documents (such as downloading, checking out, and checking in content) without opening Windchill in a web browser. You can also use Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook) to create, edit, and save Windchill documents.

For detail information of Installation, Configuration and Attribute Mapping refer the attached Document.

Would LOVE his if it really worked we have all kinds of trouble with it.  You should probably add the preferences that should be set also, under "Attachments" (for upload and download mechanism) and "Documents" for Default Contexts in Windows Explorer

The attachment is based on MS Office 2007.  For 2010, there is an option in MS Word 'Insert Windchill Attribute Field', which gives a nice overview of insertable attributes.

This document could use some updates/suggestions re: Windchill 10.1 DTI. Personally, I would also suggest upgrading from 10.1 M010 to M040. PTC did a lot of quality work to ensure a stable and robust working environment for DTI @ M040.

  1. Setting Windchill Preferences to Support Windchill DTI
Either before or after client installation, you must change the Windchill preference Attributes, Download Mechanism to Windchill Desktop Integration. If this preference is not changed, the browser will use its own definitions to open various documents instead of Windchill DTI. When the preference is changed to Windchill DTI, the DTI client will be used for all Windchill downloads.

Note: At Windchill 10.2, this step is no long required becuase the Windchill DTI client application will take care of this for you.

  2. Windchill DTI Client Configuration
Manual configuration of the client is not necessary. It is much easier to open a browser, log into Windchill and find an existing Office document. Simply click on the Office icon (XLS, DOC, PPT) and it will open in Office and configure Windchill DTI for the server you are connected to.

Note: This only works when the Attachments/Download Mechanism is set to Windchill Desktop Integration.

  3. Attribute Mapping
Hugo's comments are spot on. RIght Mouse Button is the best way to insert Windchill attributes in Excel or Word (Office does not support document properties in PowerPoint). The only caveat is the document must be checked into Windchill at least once before adding the attributes.

The process of inserting attributes is covered nicely in the Windchill Help Center under the "Inserting a Windchill Attribute" topic.
