Exporting multiple Pro/E drawings from WC 8.0 M030

WC 8.0 M030
Pre/E WF3 M250

We have vintage WC that we are planning to upgrade next year. To leave problems with WC 8 behind, we want to avoid 'upgrade' per say and start new with 10.1. Since we only use this to manage CAD data, we want export out only latest versions of all drawings and related parts/assemblies and then dump it in 10.1.

Unfortunately there is no export from workspace option available in any of 8.0 releases. Exported workspaces from 8.0 can not be imported into newer PDMLink. And since we have several thousand files to work with, 'File>Backup' from Pro/E is not very inviting.

Has anyone been in this situation before? ANy workaround available to automate or semi-automate the process so we do not have to open each of those drawing files and back them to disk?

I have opened call with PTC but have not heard of any better solution that 'back-up' from Pro/E.

Any help or suggestions in this regard is greately appreciated.

Just a thought...

- Create a new assembly whose sole purpose is to collect.

- Assembly all models that you care about to it (major job but may be worth it)

- Create a Promotion Request for this assembly and use the collection tools iteratively to collect all related drawings; now you all in one list related to the Promotion Request

- See if Export can be done for all items on a Promotion Request

- If this doesn't work, you may be able to do something similar using a collector that can be used for Export, like maybe a Managed Baseline or Package.

- Once you have an export, that can be imported to the new system; but, you will still have to deal with the Revisions, Context locations, etc.

It may be better to still use the dummy assembly, but use File, Backup in Pro/E.

Surely others have done this and probably will have better ideas.

One semi automated method to "export" would be like this:

1. add all the Pro/Engineer objects to workspace(s) on several computers
* is there way to search for "groups" of these in order to divide among workspaces/computers?
* you may have overlap ie 123.prt in more than one workspace but that is okay
2. output list of workspace objects to text file
3. parse this file to get the prt/drw/asm names
4. using the name from step 3 create a giant mapkey for each workspace that does this for each
object in the workspace
* open object
* backup to some directory (have a separate directory for each workspace)
* close window
* erase all from session
5. Fire up Pro/Engineer session(s) and run the appropriate mapkey

To "import" into Windchill 10.1 simply get several sessions of Pro/Engineer going to import these
objects, from the directories above, into a workspace.
