Numbering of Parts and Documents

We are using a 7 digit string for our document numbers and 10 for parts (3 character prefix followed by 7 digit string). Our numbers jumped from the the hundreds, 0000942 for instance, to the ten thousands, 0010943. The numbering was set to be sequential and was working fine until we noticed one day it skipped far ahead. Is there a way we can rest the numbering so we can use numbers 0001000 thru 0009999, roughly? We haven't been able to find where this setting is in order to fix it or even track down how/why it occurred. Thanks for the help.

Assuming you are using OOTB number generation you can recreate the dB sequences used by WTParts and WTDocuments per your spec, however once you get to number 0010943 you’ll get a uniqueness exception so at that time you’ll recreate the sequence again.

Make sure cache size is set to 0 when you recreate the sequence.

Another way is to use your own algorithm in the number attribute of the OIR. If you go this route you could solve the problem from now to the end of time in one shot.

Documents and CAD files use a different sequence number in the database OOTB.

Do your documents and parts utilize the same sequential numbering scheme?

As David said, you need to set the cache size to 0 so the sequencing does not skip numbers when it hasn't pulled one in a while.

Also, if you do CAD file save-as, it will pull a new number for all components of an assembly and then you throw those numbers away for the parts that are not being saved.
