Replica Cache Uses on a Master Site

What are your thoughts on the use of a replica vault on a master site when using external vaulting?

Is a replica vault for content upload useful? Does it increase performance? Under what architecres does it increase performance?

My thoughts are that when using a single master vault on a single SAN/NAS that a replica cache is not beneficial (and actually increases system workload). This is because the file are written to the cache (which is on the SAN/NAS) and then once more (perhaps when scheduled) written to the master which is also on the SAN/NAS. The cache then has to be purged etc.

Is it beneficial to have the cache on the application server and then use a schedule to transfer the data to the master (SAN/NAS) at a later time? i.e. Is their a performance increase writing to the local server disk than writing to the storage array? Is the increased hardware specifications needed for such an application server worth the increased performance? Has anyone done actual performance tests of the two architectures?
