I have always instructed users to avoid using Create CAD Document in WTPart creation, because it uses the CAD Document Templates which are a pain in the ass to maintain as they are stored in the Site level and totally separate from the start parts we use for Creo Parametric. Our Creo start parts are also stored in Windchill but in a Library context.
But now I noticed that Windchill Help Center says that you can somehow create a CAD Document Template which refers the same start part files as Creo Parametric :
https://support.ptc.com/help/wnc/r12.0.2.0/en/#page/Windchill_Help_Center%2FProEWCIntegAHCADDocTempltProEStartPart.html%23
"Additionally, you can also create new CAD document templates that reference the same start part files. The result is that regardless of whether a designer uses Creo Parametric or Windchill to create a new object, both applications use the same set of template files."
But of course there are no instructions on how to do this. Does someone know of a way to do this or is this just a mistake in the documentation?
I think going that route adds this to the config.pro as a pointer to the Windchill library location for your start parts.
Yeah, that's how we handle our Creo Parametric start parts.
But when we create a new CAD Document in Windchill with New Part -> Create CAD Document, it uses some other templates that are stored in the Site context. And I was wondering if there really is some way for us to use just one set of templates for both the CADs created in Creo and CADs created in Windchill.
Ok, I think you're getting at this:
The Site or Org or Product templates - when created - make a copy of whatever the driving document is but in your config.pro you point to where the original CAD source is... a Library context perhaps.
I think the instructions are deceiving.
New CAD document templates will point to the appropriate start part, yes... but then they will create a copy of it at the context/org/site level instead of referring to the original. You want it to refer to the original so that you don't have to manage the file at a higher level which is a pain in the ass, I agree.
Haven't tried this but could you point the config.pro locations to the org level or site level template files?
You can then still manage the single file but with whatever wcadmin account has access at that level to edit the actual template file in situ.
Ideally, the CAD document template at the Windchill level would be an actual pointer to the original start part instead of copying it.
