Speak up now, or the mail exploder will disappear!


The shocking news from day one of PTC Live is that PTC want's to "absorb" the mail exploder into their on-line communities forum.http://communities.ptc.com you'll see the announcement of this at the top of the page.

I went up to Ron and Dan durning the break and said what are you doing to my mail exploder. The answer was there was pressure to only have one source of communication instead of some stuff on the forum and some via the mail exploder. They are having discussions next week on how to transfer the data from ptcuser to the ptc site.

I asked if I was still going to get emails and the answer was no.

I'm sorry but this is killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Make no mistake, if you don't raise your voice on this issue the mail exploder will disappear.

I took the liberty of adding a couple more groups to this message. Many
employers do not allow online social sites. Mine does... sorta. The rules
change quite often & are ambiguous to say the least. Last I heard we were
not supposed to post at all on any Internet forum. So far, my IT folks
have left email alone.

PTC has always "wanted" a lot, & now they want to force us to use their
slow, cumbersome Internet community. If they want it so bad, then
integrate email with it.

Thanks for the news!

I took a look at the forum, and found I can subscribe to posts in the
areas I am interested in. If I get e-mails for new posts to the Windchill
forum, like I think I will, and if that is the forum they use for polling
and gathering "enhancement requests," then I think consolidation is a good
thing.



I love these e-mail lists, but if I were a Product Line manage, then
having to monitor this forum as the "official" feedback mechanism only to
find some of the more interesting and useful discussions happening on a
separate forum would be frustrating and difficult to manage and respond to
effectively.

I suspect this change will help us get what we want as a community of
users out of PTC product management more efficiently.

Thank you, Friends.

The Landfill exploder has been my number resource for knowledge for many years; however, I've taken some time to explore the on-line community on ptc.com. I found the functionality of this new community to be very slick and some of the content was very well done. I also found some of the blog posts to be very informative.

The only thing I found missing was many of the awesome great people from this board.

I wonder if there is a way to keep much of this very knowledgeable exploder community intact AND embrace the new functionality offered by the ptc.com on-line community. Migrating to this can't be any harder than say... migrating a user community from Intralink to Windchill, can it?

I agree with you Marvin but the amount of effort required for me to reply to a new thread with a couple of screenshots is IMMENSE on that site. There is no way I have the time to do all the effort to post to the PTC Community site.

Yeah I do not get to monitor PTC's site as easily but you do get emails if
you bother to configure your settings, just not as easy to reply like on the
exploder.



PTC is more than capable of mimicking the capability of the exploder. One
completely REDICULOUS thing about the PTC messaging site is if you switch
companies / PTC.com accounts; I got replies on there from years ago under
one account and then replies under a more recent account.



I think it's really DUMB that they'd get rid of this feature because I can
reply to email without having to authenticate and sign in every time.



There is much to think about PTC from a community relations standpoint. A
survey should be elicited with time invested into ensuring a smooth
transition. My PTC.com "blog" has been completely empty for years now.

If we really want to keep the exploded, we may want to see how it could work in the communities site. What do we need to add to it? Steve Vinyard's post has the best illustration but let's see if we can get an example from another site that has the closest match. Here are my thoughts:

* See all posts on topic via subscription sent via email or txt. RSS digest options.

* To be able to respond to those posts in the same manner without logging in. Email or txt

* Subscription: topic, thread, keyword, hashtag

* Online - Ability to list all posts by date not just grouped by conversation or thread.

* Add your own ...

to Add to Antonio's bullet points:



  • To be google searchable to the general public

  • if searchable, then we can and to the existing post and reduce the duplication of post (LOL: that's PIM and CRM tools)

  • to have catagorical separation via search or title between problem and soluitons like a wiki. Thus, navigation is much simple (ie. use XML documentation with DITA structure)

  • there should also be a voting on the post with yes this is a good idea, no this is a bad idea. Or we should test this idea to prove it out.

This current technology is quite out-dated. If I were to place a link to another post, the whole post is messed up.
