Ways to be notified when a WTDoc is iterated or checked out in Windchill

Hi
Please consider the following scenario:

I have a MS Word document checked into Windchill in the "In Work State" The MSWord document is the primary document of record describing the Released Version of the item in our ERP system. It is part of product structure and it is part of a larger integrated project.

The item is not checked out
Another user checks it out

I cannot have the MS Word document in a workspace, so I will not get the familiar status updates
How can I be notified of the change in status of the MS Word Document?

Key requirement for an acceptable solutions :Asking engineers to go to the Product information Page for each MS Word doc is not an acceptable solution any more than asking Pro/E users to go lookup the status of each individual CAD file on individual Product Information Pages.

Windchill Discussions?
Windchill Subscriptions?
Windchill ProjectLink?
On a Windchill Change Notice?
Stored Windchill Search?
Custom webject report?
Windchill Folder View?
Develop a solution?
Dynamic Documents?
(I'm running out of options...)

Please post back to the thread so the summary will build itself automatically ( I think there is a link at the bottom of this posting)

Fundamental confusion from the word "check out" having different meaning in Intralink 3.x vs. Windchill.

No Workspace concept needed for Windchill for WTDocs.

If this is for all documents, maybe a specific type of documents of that
type, and you would always want that notification, then Notification
Policies are an option. Downside to a Notification Policy is an Admin
would have to delete the Notification, the recipient of the Notification
couldn't "opt-out"

If it's only for specific documents then subscriptions may fit, plus you
have the ability to cancel a subscription.

You could create a custom report that just showed the Checked-Out
documents. Through the use of Cognos, you could schedule that report to be
run/delivered say once a day.

These are just some thoughts off the top of my head.
