deleting iba attribute

Good day PTC Users!

We have created a wtpart subtype with a number of custom attributes. Now, certain attributes have become out dated and need to be removed.

If one goes to the type definition utility and remove it from the subtype then it removes OK but when one views the attributes of an existing part then the attribute is still there.

Also I have tried removing the definition for the attribute via the manager but it says that it cant be deleted since it is current in use (which makes sense).

Is there any way that one can remove values/instances of this attribute from existing parts.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Hi Stefan,

Search for posts by my name, I answered this a year or more ago and posted SQL for it. It is NOT supported by PTC though.

If you cannot find it, I can search my archived messages for the old response.

Dave

We studied this in detail - more than once...

These seem to make good sense:
An attribute can be removed from a Type, resulting in it not being displayed on create for a new instance.
An attribute that has been used stays mapped to existing instances, and the values stay static (meaning that released data is unchanged when you delete the mapping of the attribute to the type in type manager - as desired).

This is the one thing we'd like to have different:
An attribute cannot be deleted once used, even if all the instances of all the types that use the attribute are deleted.

Not too long ago, we replaced three Boolean attributes with a single string attribute, with multiple values allowed. All data existing at the time still has the three Boolean attributes (in addition to the new string attribute), and these remain for all iterations going forward - a big nuisance to users and a confusion factor since the info is repeated. Here's where using Profiles comes in - you can nicely hide any attribute from all or a subset of your users via Profiles.

SQL is the only way of know of to do what you want to do.

But be careful. It won't be supported, and it is easy to mess up if you
don't know what you are doing.

Once you understand how IBAs and their definitions/values are set up, you
can probably make it happen. But do a lot of testing.

Hello

what about a work around where you hide the attributes to the end users.

You can in 9.1 with profiles as pointed out by Mike in a previous reply.

We have this set up at several places..

In Type and Attributes manager.. here is how you would hide them.
