Applying Decals to a sheet metal part.

Im teaching 14 year olds a simple packaging project and I want to show  them how to produce realistic packaging simulations.  Sheet metal will get us  the development quite easily but  i cant crack getting the  materials/decals right.  Any help appreciated.

The 'can't crack' is that Peter wants to apply the texture to the flat pattern and have it follow the surfaces back into the folded condition.
