Assembly constraint defaulting to "Normal'

Assembly constraint defaulting to "Normal'

Even when assemblling something as simple as a bolt, I'll select an 'Axis to Axis' constraint. When I select the 2nd constraint and pick 2 surfaces (Mate), 1/2 the time Creo selects 'Normal', and constraints are invalid.

I've always wondered this. If Pro/E is trying to helpful by assuming some assembly constraints as you're placing a part in an assembly, why does it sometimes select invalid constraints? You'd think that if the software is making constraint assumptions it would be programmed to only make valid constraint assumptions.

Never ASS-u-me that Pro/E will make the right choice, always strengthen
the assumptions, or define your own to firm up your design intent. In
this case flip off the assumption.
