Creo 4.0 assembly mode missing axis and plane

When I start a new assembly file, I can see CSYS and 3 planes on the modeling window, but they are not shown in the model tree on the left. This does not happen when I start a new part file. Additionally, when I call in parts into this new assembly file, I cannot see the model tree of those parts (in other words, I cannot see the all the steps necessary creating that model) which makes it impossible for me to pick center axis or planes for correct constraints.
