Finding Distances

Finding Distances

Hello; Recently, the need has arisen to find the distance between the center of mass of sub-assemblies within a main assembly and some common point on the main assembly. The reason is to find out; as I am adding sub-assemblies to the main assembly, how much weight am I putting on, and where? Currently my method is as follows. In each sub-assembly, I can generate a mass properties report that gives me the center of mass with respect to that sub-assemblies main coordinate system. Then from that, I can relay it back to the common point on the main assembly, however this is a tedious process. I am wondering if there is some quick way (like Analysis -> measure -> distance) where I can chose the center of mass as a parameter to put into the distance measuring tool. This would not only speed up the process, but it would insure that I am getting correct numbers for distances. Any insight would help. Thanks!

If your sub-assemblies have their CG at their respective coordinate system (either at default or make one at CG), then you can measure between coorsys at both levels and save the measure as an feature in the assembly. Make sure you use lots of names on these coorsys and measure features to make finding the correct one easy on the screen. Also use the smart filter at the bottom of your window to also make the selection of coorsys easier during the measure operation.
