Like all other things well defined in standards, sheet metal gauges should be included in the sheet metal module.
We should be able to set the material using standard gauge thickness and include common materials such as cold rolled steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper among others that follow standard gauge thickness. Add some pre-plate options like galvanized or provide plating thickness as an optional addition (pre and post plate thickness).
Again, drive this with a similar table as the current material options, but keep it simple to only account for gauge thickness. Other parameters could (should) be driven back to the material properties parameters and further details about the material can be corrected in the material properties dialog if it is important to the user.
Though I know gauges are still used by many companies. All of the standards organizations are trying to eliminate the use of such. ASTM states in specification ASTM A480-10a "The use of gage number is discouraged as being an archaic term of limited usefulness not having general agreement on meaning."
One reason, which thicknesses are you going to use for each gauge, those from; US Standard Gage (which was used for import tax purposes), AIME Standard Decimal Gauge (from 1877), Manufacturer's Standard Gage (which is still common and reliable for UNCOATED sheet), or perhaps any of the obsoleted AISI or ASME tables (which both organizations no longer support or use)?
Just google "sheet metal gauge" and see how many different charts you find with different values all claiming to be "standard".
Now, I like the idea behind what you are saying, to be able to setup a standrd list of thicknesses with associated tolerances that users can select from. That I would love to see.
