Quite often, sketcher doesn't take into account all the correct dimensions and constraints that effect the conflict when a sketch element (line, arc or point) is over-constrained by too many constraints or dimensions.
I know this, because I can delete a dimension outside of the scope of the conflict list and it resolves the conflict.
I pointed this out to the Product Line Manager (Netesh Gohil) 20 years ago. (He no longer works for PTC.)
Intent manager is not 100% accurate in capturing design intent. I wish users still the had the option to turn it off.
It has improved over the years but I still struggle to capture the dimensions scheme I want occasionally.
If you have examples of intent manager not constraining sketches properly then open a call with support and post it here for others to view.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. I wish I could turn off intent manager and explicitly specify my "intentions" with respect to sketch entities. I find myself playing all sorts of games when I'm sketching, purposely *preventing* intent manager from making incredibly dumb assumptions. Particularly when it insists on making the line I'm currently sketching have an equal length constraint with one line, then another slightly longer line, then another ad infinitum.
I believe the issue being brought up in this post is with Resolve Sketch (Conflict Resolution).
Many times the constraint or dimension that is not wanted is not in the Resolve Sketch list, requiring you to press Undo, delete the unwanted constraint and recreate the wanted constraint or dimension.
I have also had issues with constraints that I created disappearing, no Resolve Sketch pop-up, when I add another that creates an over constrained condition.
@KenFarley I agree that the intent managed can be a pain. I many times use the shift key to disable it on fly. You can also use LMB to disable an unwanted constraint when it pops up or lock a correct constraint, such as vertical, and holding shift will not disable it.
Here's a simple example of how this doesn't work.
Before with radius R0.14 on the outside of the hem (on the non-construction geometry added by "thicken").
Add .010 dimension for the inside of the hem (on the "thicken" geometry),
and the "Resolve Sketch" does not list the R0.14 dimension which was determining the hem "gap".
Delete the R.014 dimension and the R0.05 dimension appears.
Add R.10 dimension
Resolved without sketcher conflict. You have to be creative.
