I created the manual because I wanted to share the knowledge on creating exotic shapes with Creo and have 'm parametric too. (I can deform or scale the shape very easily now)

Another Creo trick I did with this shape is to analyse the rotating behaviour in a mechanism:

https://grabcad.com/library/oval-gears-simulated-in-creo-2-1

Also I did have a real model printed: see: https://grabcad.com/library/oval-gears-iphone-case-1

I saw an antique real example on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkQ2pXkYjRM

There's lots more examples on youtube by the way, but no, havent found a real application actually..

The timing pattern of such gears are very useful in application.  However, the tooth profile is not as straight forward as the tutorial suggests (not in practice) but is often close enough to mimic for demonstration purposes.

The beauty of the tutorial is the use of many techniques in Pro|E.  Spinal Bend is nearly forgotten.

Thanks for pointing that out Antonius, I already forgot about the elliptical chainrings (despite being an enthusiastic cyclist myself).
