import step with start parts

when importing a step file that is an assembly, can you force it to use
start parts for the parts rather than blank empty parts? we don't want to
manually enter default datums and parameters.

Yep.  Set this config option:

     intf_in_use_template_models yes

It'll then use your default start parts/assys as set in these options:

     template_designasm [path to start asm]
     template_solidpart [path to start part]

Just curious, are there any recommendations for the start parts used for
this sort of import? I thought I was going crazy but here's what I
found out...



If I use my start part, which only has the 3 datum planes, I get this:





If don't use the start part, I get this...





The second one is obviously correct. The pain is, I have to go in and
add datums and axes to assemble parts. It's a constant problem, since I
have to use customer files for analysis.



Any suggestions?

My guess is that the start part has a different accuracy or units setting
than whatever your defaults are. STEP will convert the part differently
based on the accuracy and or units of the part it is being read into.
