mirrored part issues

I have a part that was made a while ago. It was created by mirroring another part. The big issue was that the part had text on it. The way this was handled was to backfill the text and then recreate the text correctly. I know we struggled a bit when this happened (back in WF3). I was wondering if there are any experts on mirrored parts that can chime in.

The text feature was created using surfaces and the sketches make their way into the mirrored part as well. Is it possible to mirror a part up to a certain feature?

You can create a family table instance of the source part and suppress the text features. Then redefine the mirror to refer to the instance instead. Then add the appropriate text in the target part.

I'd probably leave the curves in the source so they end up reversed in the mirrored model, then mirror those curves and re-create the text cut/protrude geometry if the text is the same between the two parts.

One method of doing this is by using what I call the "middle man part" as follows:

1. create new part for your middle man part
2. create an inheritance feature in the middle man part and inherit the source part
3. suppress features as appropriate in the inheritance feature
4. create new part by mirroring the middle man part

late your your "initial" part (parent of the mirrored part) model tree;
prior to putting "text" on part :

*add a feature to "copy all solid surfaces"
*then create a publish feature and publish the quilt created from the
"copy all solid surfaces"
*in your target part (mirrored part) - first feature will be a copy geom
referencing the publish geom feature from the parent part above.
*with the quilt published now in your target part, select the quilt, AS A
QUILT (selection filter) then mirror the quilt about your desired plane.
*solidify mirrored quilt
*hack your your text features

Just a thought...

I like mirroring quilts...very clean.

Pete, (or Bernie) I think your method will solve my problem which is that the datum curves come through on my mirror parts and can't be hidden.

I can't find the features you talk about - can you give more detail? I am using Creo 2.0 M160.

Well done Pete! You beat me to it...
I'll second the "Copy Quilt" method. I use it all the time. No Family
table to deal with, no extra part... Set the "Ext Copy Geom" to
"Independant" and PDM doesn't complain about it either. Hmmm - Gets the
job done and saves a battle with PDM... That's a win-win!.
