replace a new, duplicated component with the original

WF3, Intralink 3.4

Here's what my colleague did:

Assembly A contains subassembly B. He duplicated A to A2, and B to B2,
knowing he needed a new A, and thinking he also needed a new B. Now,
however, he has discovered that he no longer needs a new B. So what he'd
like to do is this: in new assembly A2, replace new subassembly B2 with the
original subassembly B, without having to redefine every child of B2. Is
there a way to do this?

I tried using the Replace command, and the "Reference Model" option comes
back with the error saying that B & B2 are not related at all, even though
they kind of are. Is there anyway to do this that doesn't involve an
Interchange assembly?

Right click B2, select Replace and use the layout option. From the window that pops up, select B as the replacement. You will have to define how B was placed in the assembly, but each child of it. Even though B and B2 are the same to us, Pro/E sees them as two completely different entities. Even though they have all of the same features in the same spots, they are all referenced internally differently which is why you will have to redefine its position in the assembly.

If there is another way, I'd love to know about it.

Please find attached a video that outlines the replace of unrelated
components. This enables you to evaluate the geometry and then
automatically generate tags for the replacement.

The menu picks are Replace > Unrelated Component > Browse > <select<br/>Model> > Edit Reference Table > Evaluate

Lyle,

Yes, this can be done without interchange.

Here's how:
Open A2
while in session rename B2 to B.
regen A2 (just to be safe)
save A2 to a working dir (now A2 will be looking for B not B2)
make sure the original B is in the working dir
open A2

Hope this helps

David
