Is anyone aware of an easy way to add bulk materials to 3D models which are added based on the shape of where they are being added.
For example spray foam added in areas with a lot of detail, Thick painted surfaces, material that is spackled on.
We have a lot of these kinds of materials that our customer wants to see for visual, envelopes, and possibly thermal and weight analysis.
So far the only solution we have is using copied surfaces & thicken, Using surfaces to cut areas out of extrusions, etc. But the problem lies with areas that have a lot of fine details, tubes, brackets, componentsetc. We could just overlap those items but we're trying to be as close as possible to reality.
We also have to add these to Windchill but that's another obstacle to overcome.

You may create a block of the material and subtract the other parts from it, using Insert - Shared Data - Cutout from other model
The drawback is creating dependencies to the assembly - and the parts take some time to regenerate.
Insert a bulk item into the assembly. Assign a parameter called SURFACE_AREA.
Hit Analysis>Model>Mass Properties.
Pull "Quick" Tab down to "Feature"
Under Feature>Uncheck all except SURF_AREA
Set a relation so that SURF_AREA=SURF_AREA:MASS_PROP_1 or whatever you named the analysis feature.
Use SURF_AREA as the quanity in you BOM.
