One may get a result when solving an equation symbolically with a message that says "result to large to display, but can be used in subsequent
calculations if assigned to a function or variable". How does one go about doing this?
For example: E(p)^1/3 -p-(1-p)*E(p) = 0 solve, E(p)
The above error message is received.

That depend upon what the reason for solving an equation symbolically is and what you need the result for. You may do as adviced and assign the result a variable or a function and use that variable/function for subsequent calculation. Its not an error so far but MC is just refusing to display the result.
You may also use "simplify" or "factor" together with the solve command, hoping that the simplified solution is smaller and can be displayed.
If the result is a vector you can try to assign it a variable and look at the individual elements. chances are, that MC will be able to display most of them.
But its all a matter of what you are trying to do at the end and what the symbolically solved expression should be good for.
For example: E(p)^1/3 -p-(1-p)*E(p) = 0 solve, E(p)

Really??
