Mathematica as Whiteboard

Mathematica as Whiteboard

Got me another one o' them there Mathematica invites to wean Mathcad users onto Mr Wolfram's product, this time by inviting me to look at Mathematica as whiteboard.

I can only hope that PTC have got some pretty cool advances in Mathcad's whiteboarding and documentation capability in the pipeline. This is precisely the thing I've been Cassandra-ing about for over 4 years.

Stuart

Just found a blog http://blog.wolfram.com/2009/01/21/quick-starting-mathematica-with-palettes/ that bears upon this.

I have got this letter too:

Hi,

I know that the "whiteboard" interface is something that Mathcad users value. Below is a link to a one-minute screencast showing how Mathematica can also be used as a "whiteboard":

I'd appreciate your feedback on how it compares to Mathcad and how it can be improved.

Regards,

Mary Richmond

PS: Please let me know if I can help you with a 15-day trial.

I ran their one minute demo and it wasn't obvious to me that you end up with the "live" document that is the Mathcad paradigm. For example, look at how they define the integral both on the lhs and rhs before evaluating.

I guess a free 15-day trial would help figure it out... 🙂

As an aside, I wonder if they poached our email addresses from this forum.

Yes.

I didn't receive this last email from them, but that's probably because I sent a rather nasty reply to the last one. In that email they told us where they got the email addresses from:

"Hi",

Nice reply Rich.

I also have been getting the same silliness from Wolfram but I went ahead and watched their demo. The one thing that struck me was how much pointing, clicking and mouse-ing around there was a bit like a ribbon bar but without a ribbon bar. Viva Mathcad's classic, live, open page, "whiteboard" paradigm don't let PTC spoil it with margin constraints as in M'. And further more... Viva classic keyboard shortcuts!
