No licence on first startup - what do I do?

Hi I'm new here and have downloaded and installed CoCreate PE on my laptop at home, my problem is I a ""no valid licence for cocreate PE"" message and can't get any farther. I've asked about this in a thread on the other forum in a thread that had the exact same problem, the solution wasn't posted there though so I don't know if it was resolved. I'm running win 7rc (was an XP comp but new hard drive an I took the oportunaty to try the new one) Also a little about myself. Self employed sign maker, ex engineer with a workshop full of older equipment as engineering is my hobby. I have a medium sized CNC mill running mach 3 hence my interest in 3d CAD, I also use Meshcam and Sheetcam. Thanks Steve

<p>First, CoCreate Modeling PE has never been tested with Windows 7. It is not on the list of supported systems.<br />This could very well be your problem.</p><p>However, there are other more common reasons why you have no license. When you start Modeling PE, the application sends a request to CoCreate for an activation key. <br />If your installation is recognized (IE: you registered correctly), an activation key is returned to your system. This key is installed in your registry.</p><p>There could be any number of things that block the installation of this activation key. In many cases, users have installed security software that blocks our program from installing this key in you registry. Software Doctor is the one we see most often.<br />You may want to look at the threads in here.......<br /><a href=""forum-view.asp?fid=14"">http://apps.cocreate.com/OneSpaceModelingPE/Secure/Forum/forums/forum-view.asp?fid=14</a><br />for more info.</p>

Hi Mike Thanks for the reply, I've checked windows firewall and I've just checked the reg permissions and they are ok too. I think that win 7 is meant to be similar to Vista (I'm no software engineer) but I guess it's the main problem, Win 7 is due for release in October so I hope it's sorted soon. In the meantime I installed it on my work desktop with win xp pro so I'll just have to mess around with it there. I may end up reloading xp on the laptop as I just wanted to try win 7 to see if it was much better or different, my conclusion is that it's no better than xp and some things are harder to do. Thanks Steve

I noticed the same in the win7 rc version build 7100. I have however successfully installed pe in windows 7 build 7000. In the rc version the registration form just never shows, and eventually it says no valid license. p.s. I did not however try a new build 7000 install to test the registration due to the max 2 registrations.

Yes mine is the RC 7100 build, I also tried turing off the firewall, no different. On my xp comp with zonealarm I noticed another program accesses the internet when Cocreate starts so I'm going to try that on it's own. Steve

For more detailled debug information, proceed as follows: <ul> <li>Create a new system environment variable called OLAPE_debug and set it to a value of 1. <li>When you now start Modeling PE, you will see message box titled ""OLAPE Debug Version"" which also displays the path of a debug logfile. <li>Proceed with startup/activation until an error is reported <li>In this logfile, you will now (hopefully) find some more hints. </ul>

Hi Claus I created the system variable in the add system variable box, checked it had been made but there is no dialog window comes up, I copied and paste the variable name from your post so it should be right. Maybe OLAPE.exe is not being started, I'll try stating it manually. Steve

I just tried this myself to verify that the environment variable works as expected - and it did. I tested on a Windows XP system, though - see the attached screenshot. On Vista and Windows 7, with their user account control and elevation mechanisms, you may need to be careful about setting the environment variable for the right user.

Ah right, I set it as a system variable not a user variable. I'll try that tonight and let you know how it went. Thanks Steve

I can say for sure in build 7000 it does give the first registration screen.... I just tried. Will try wil the debug as well but I have the idea this issue is related.... http://apps.cocreate.com/OneSpaceModelingPE/Secure/Forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=548&posts=5&start=1

Well I added the user variable and set to 1, no debug window and still no valid licence. I had already tried the linked solution with the registry permissions, My current user has full control and write permissions on the registry entry and all sub entries.

Wild guess: On Vista and Windows 7, applications may run in elevated (administrator) or non-elevated mode. Depending on which mode you're running an application, it may or may not see environment variable definitions you've made before.

My username is an administrator on the win 7 laptop (and was from installing win 7) Ichecked last night in my user admin bit and it showed the system and user variables for me and the debug variable was listed so it's running under the correct user, I also installed CoCreate while logged in under my username. I may be onto a hiding to nothing here and after using win 7 for a month or so I'm not sure what advantage it has over XP, the computer runs slower and I've yet to find anything it does better than XP! So I think I'll just have to reinstall XP home. Thanks Steve

I did a search on the hard drive to see if the log was being created without me being told and while I didn't find a log from OLAPE there was a appcrash log for OLAPE.exe, it stated that the application stopped working. Good sleuth job! C0000096 stands for an ""invalid instruction"" crash. Uh, oh. Since OLAPE takes care of much of the application activation process, Modeling PE won't run if OLAPE crashes. That also explains why you never got OLAPE debug logging output. I haven't used Windows 7 myself yet, so I cannot say whether this is an OS-specific issue or not. I'll try to hunt down a Windows 7 installation and run some experiments.

I'm glad it was some use, should I try re installing Cocreate PE?

You can try, but at this point, I'm not sure what might be causing this kind of crash, so I don't know whether reinstalling would help. Can you try and explicitly run Modeling PE in elevated (administrator) mode, to see if this makes a difference? I'll have to find a Windows 7 system which I can use to run experiments on it, so that we can find out if there is an OS-specific issue or not. This will take me some time. If anybody out there has already used Modeling PE on Windows 7, please let me know what your experiences were. Claus

Hi Claus I logged in as administrator and tried running CoCreate, no difference at all, the same by right clicking the .exe and selecting run as admin, with the same log result. Just for ref my version of Win 7 is build 7100 Steve

OK, thanks for testing! I'll get back to this thread when I've had the chance to run tests on a Windows 7 machine. (Pretty busy this week, though, so it'll take me a few more days, sorry.)

No problem, thanks for looking into it. I'm pretty busy too and my broadband has broke so I'm having trouble getting on line at the moment so hopefully it'll be sorted in a few days (just jinksed that haven't I) Steve

I finally found a system for installation tests - and I can now confirm that the activation helper program crashes. I don't have any insight on the cause of the crash yet, nor on how to work around or fix the issue. Claus

I wasn't able to find the root cause today, but I submitted an internal bug report so that someone more familiar with the activation code can look into it. Claus

For what it's worth, I get the following ""OK"" dialog box trying to run CoCreate for the first time after installing on a Win7rc (build 7100) system: ______________________________________________________________________ Xenocode Virtual Appliance Runtime This application has encountered the following error: 0x0, with following description: The operation completed successfully. Additional information: GetModuleHandleA failed on: [nothing is specified here:0000000000] Please contact the publisher of this application for more information. ______________________________________________________________________ Clicking ""OK"" on the above dialog then results in the ""No valid license..."" message from CoCreate. Hope this info may do a tiny bit to speed up resolution of the problem (or at least does not add to the confusion)... CoCreate is a product I'd really like to try. --RT

I have the same problem on Windows 7. I can't say I really understand the purpose of having a license key on a free product. Why would PTC create such a difficult and time consuming registration/licensing process?
