Can you define and manage two different document sub types, yet both types use the same extension

Hi,
Suppose you have two applications that create files that share the same extension, say .dat
.dat files created in application #1 are completely incompatible with .dat files created in application #2 and vice versa.

Can you define two uniquely different document types in Windchill to manage these two types of files separately?
Could one be an EPMDocument and the other a plain ole document?

Thanks,

See Customizer manual page 1162 (9.0 M050).

Copy icons to folder: codebase\wt\clients\images
Set a WC shell to ptc\WC9\Windchill\src
Run the command: java wt.content.DataFormatUtil -add
Enter info for each needed data type
Format name
MIME type
Description
Indexable
Icon

For each data type, also add an entry in the FormatNameRB.rbInfo file
Run the command: resourcebuild wt.content.*
This will update the FormatNameRB.rbInfo file in the ptc\WC9\Windchill\src\wt\content folder to reflect the new types.

We manage multiple document soft types with .pdf as the primary
content. So, I think that wouldn't be any different. But your question
might be more in regards to how that file is opened or handled by the
client based on the soft type. If that is the case, I'm not sure if you can.

If you are talking about different CAD documents (EPMDocuments) with the
same extension it should not be an issue if they are checked into windchill
via the proper CAD WorkGroup manager. If you check them in as a WTDocument
then there could be issues when it comes to Windchill determining what
application to use to open it.
