Trying to delete iteration of top level assembly

I am trying to delete the latest iteration of the top level assembly, but I receive a build error when I try. The dialog pops up with hundreds of parts, even when I select "required" or "none" for dependencies. Several of these parts are locked up in libraries. and haven't changed in years. Any ideas?
