Common Name is used primarily in Windchill (where it is called "name" confusingly). It allows you to use punctuation, spaces, capitalisation etc to give the part/asm/drawing a more descriptive title. You can access it in drawing title blocks (or any other notes) using &PTC_COMMON_NAME:D (this will display the common name of the drawing, drop the 😄 to display the common name of the active part.
