using copy geometry surfaces to recreate geometry in a target part

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to create an ejector pin for a casted part, and I'm using a copy geometry feature to reference the shape of the well in the component (in the image, the copied geometry is painted yellow, and the pin component is grey) The surfaces that I'm referencing from the casting are part of a solid model, but that's making this more difficult when I try to recreate that shape on the end of the pin.  Because the copy geometry is from surfaces derived from solid geometry, I can't copy everything and once in order to make a quilt that I can then use to either solidify a cut or use as the end condition of an extrusion.

I've tried using intent references and creating a seed and boundary quilt in the casting model, but nothing is really working.  How can I take surfaces from my copy geometry and integrate them into the shaft of my ejector pin as solid geometry?

You are using the surfaces from the external copy geom (ECG) as a depth reference for the pin extrusion. The most robust use of this reference in this context to extrude up to a quilt not a surface. In the extreme you could create a copy of solid surfs in the cast part model and pipe that through the ECG. Select one surface of the solid and then pick from list and select solid surfs.

If you want to minimize the geometry within the ECG then make a quilt in the cast part that extends well beyond the projected area of the pin and use that.

Perhaps you can elaborate on why "nothing is really working", because what you've tried is pretty much what you should have done.  For defining seed-and-boundary surfaces, maybe review the quick-reference-card in this thread: Automatic-Selection-of-all-surface-between-two-surface

Apologies, that was a bit vague.  what I meant by saying "nothing is really working" is that I was trying different click orders during selection, choosing different surface or datum references, using individual surface selection vs seed and boundary.  So far, it seems like creo really cares about the order you select references in sometimes, or whether a feature needs to be highlighted before a tool will potentially open up in the selection lists.  That must be a way to keep the RMB menus from being bloated with greyed out options.

regardless. The actual issue turned out to be that my imported casting wasn't able to resolve as a solid feature, so everything has been independent surfaces and I failed to notice until now.  That's the issue.  It remains to be seen if I can use surfaces as references for the end condition of an extrusion or if it absolutely has to be a quilt.
