In general Mathcad gives you the solution to an equation, if it exists AND it is equipped with the proper algorithm to solve it. Mathcad does not necessarily solve equations the way you would do it, and it also does not show the steps it takes, if any.
But you can solve equations step by step symbolically using Mathcad if you tell it what substitutions it should make, by multiplying the numerator and denominator of a quotient with the same variable, by multiplying the left an right hand side of an equation with the same variable, adding or subtracting the same expressions left and right of the equal sign, or applying both sides of an equation to the same function, and any combinations of those. But be aware, that the symbolic output of Mathcad isn't always presented in a mode you would prefer, and it is hard to control that.
