Fitting an Ellipse to a Blob

Please see attached. I believe that my fitting method is correct with regards to orientation, but not size. I am missing some scaling somewhere so the plotted ellipse, blob, and calculated semi-axes all provide different areas. What am I missing?

Apologies in advance for not embedding the image, but it's small.
