Thanks.  I didn't even notice there were two |x| operators.  That fixed it.

Its the same symbol which can be interpreted in two different ways ("Absolute Value" or "Square Matrix Determinant").

Normally Mathcad tries to automatically detect what you mean and interprets accordingly, but sometimes it can't.
You can change the meaning of the operator yourself by right-clicking  the expression and choosing the appropriate:

Its the same symbol which can be interpreted in three different ways:

  1. Absolute Value
  2. Square Matrix Determinant

3. The cardinality of a set (the number of elements in a set).

norm of vector

I have used it for that in the distant past. I was just assuming the vectorize operation in Mathcad was smarter than me...it usually is.🤣😂

I considered that (norm of a vector), but have to disagree, because in essence it's the same as 'absolute value'. And also the same as 'modulus of a complex value', by the way.

The operation in all cases is to take the root of the sum of the squares of all 'elements' provided through the argument of the operator.

Don't know...
