Password Recovery

I have an old MathCad File with password protection then.

After not used it for considerable period of time, I completely forgot the password to unprotect it. However, I need to use it now and do some modification.

Can anybody help me to crack its password so that I can edit and modify it now. Any help is highly appreciated.

The xmcdz format is gzip format.

You need to be able to crack that. Not easy.

There are products on the market though.

Yes, but that was to open locked collapsed areas, and then only under certain circumstances. I can't unprotect this document.

Then, like Voltaire said "when a person is dead, it's for a long time", as well as this work sheet !

yep, The newer versions have started using strong (or even very strong) password protection.

There may be a backdoor via PTC paid support because it has to be able to compute...

Or use a Russian password cracker. [Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery - company it was]

Be very careful using such tools. You may find that your password cracker is actually a password cracker/keystroke logger which mysteriously sends emails at 2:00am when you are not watching.

But my Russian-made firewall will prevent that 😉

I'm not sure that's the problem, Philip. Reading it
is fine, but changing some of the regions is not
possible because the worksheet is password
protected at Mathcad level.

Oh ! I missed that password level = work sheet.
In fact I had no recollection such ~ existed !

...Choose Area / Unlock from the Format menu. You may see a dialog box prompting you for a password

Looks that somebody just wanted someone to tell how to crack open a file. The user seems to be completely anonymous, brand new, and there is nothing that indicates it is actually his file.

Indeed. In the past I have offered to open locked areas (but never to tell someone how to do so) when someone has claimed to have "forgotten the password", but only if they can provide a letter from a company executive, an email address for their professor or teacher, etc. I have made several such offers in response to requests for help, and guess how many people have then actually pursued it? Answer: zero.

Richard

I keeo my password in a small notebook. I never thought I could do recovery for some stranger.
