The "trick" is simply that they have to be plugged in to a power supply. The polarity obviously has to be right too, or you turn into a cretin.

If 1 mA can do what they claim, just think what an amp or two could do! I going to plug my tinfoil hat into a 1kV supply right now! By tomorrow morning I will be a mathematical genius!

Little bit disappointed about the following quote though.

It all seems a bit too much trouble, all that business about connecting headsets up. I have a chair that comes with it's own metal headcap and will readily supply several kV - got it cheap at an eBay auction of goods from Sing Sing. Sit down, strap in and you're well on your way to collecting the Field's Prize!
