Calculating the Tensile Stress and Tensile Forces in the Bolts of a Flange Pipe

This worksheet will:

  • Calculate the tensile forces in the bolts at the flange of a pipe 
  • Apply to Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering 
  • Perform using force, tensile forces, control volume, momentum fluxes, pressure force, momentum, tensile stress, etc.

This worksheet using PTC Mathcad looks at a problem where a portion of a pipe containing two discharges is bolted to the remainder at the flange and is interested in solving for the tensile forces in the bolts at the flange required to hold the pipe in place. To begin, the worksheet displays a diagram of the pipe and outlines the control volume. The worksheet then identifies 

  • three momentum fluxes crossing the control surface 
  • the time rate of the change of momentum 
  • three momentum flux rates cutting the control surface.

By assuming the bolts are in tension, the force in the bolts is to the left. The worksheet shows you how to confirm this through calculations. It then calculates for the tensile stress for each bolt, supposing there are six in the pipe system.
