A question of resolution ...

Hi,

We are all reasonably used to micro strain and reasonably comfortable with deflections/physical movements of structures that could be anything from fractions of millimetres to much larger subtended distances.

I have a laser in a box (with a hole to let the light out). Switch it on from cold and it warms up. Things expand and during the warm up transient (or some clown opens a door and lets a draught in when it is warmed up) and the beam will wander around. The 'wander' would not normally be noticable but the target is very very small (inches) and a long long way away (lots of miles).

The objective would be to quantify the 'wander' and then take steps (by deisgn of experiments?) to minimise the environmental impact.

The dimensional changes due to expansion are tiny. What can we resolve to using FEA? What are the analysis/modelling considerations/limitations? Creo Simulate specific considerations?

I have begun a bit of a literature search (google) but thought that there may be some useful time saving pointers out there.

Thanks

Charles
