This problem is quite common on all of our Windows 7-64 bit machines and
has been since our Windows 7 rollout (almost 2 years). We have all
thumbnail viewing shut off; with Adobe Acrobat being one of the largest
contributors to crashes of Windows Explorer. Also in Windows 7-64 bit,
the 'aero' interface causes problems with ANSYS animations, so we shut
off AERO.
I have a suspicion that UAC (User Account Control) is the real culprit,
but IT is mum on the subject... You may want to try shutting this UAC
and see if Explorer crashes less.
