common name in Creo.

Hello, What is the purpose of the common_name attribute in Creo on parts and drawings?  Is there anyway to turn this feature off?  I don't want to use it.

Leave it blank, you don't have to use it unless you use Windchill.

We do leave it blank. However, when we copy an assembly and assign new part numbers to some parts it automatically fills it in on the part and drawing.  Would like to turn that off.

Where does it show up on the drawing at? It will only show up IF you are using it in a table. If that is the case, edit your format and remove that field from the format.

I think Creo automatically presents the user with suggested names when doing Save-As. It doesn't mean the user has to accept them. Common name is a special parameter and there is no way that it will get turned off. Training users to do this correctly isn't easy. Some are as dumb as a bag of hammers and refuse to pay attention to what they are doing, but it is always up to them as to how the name comes out.

Common Name is used to allow a name that is not subject to limitations on characters that filenames are - can use dashes, extra periods, slashes, and backslashes, parentheses, et al. No doubt it was not easy putting it in there, so there's no chance it is coming out. This was important because Pro/E and Creo are filename-limited and there needed to be a way to deal with parts where the actual name was not suitable as a file name.

Hi,

Common Name is saved in hidden system parameter PTC_COMMON_NAME in every model. It cannot be removed. As Ben Loosli mentioned, you can remove &PTC_COMMON_NAME callout from some table cell in your drawing format.
