cri_grafting_enable config option

Folks,

I was wondering if anyone knows what a CRI Model is and how the "Graft Features" menu is supposed to work?

The config option in Pro/E cri_grafting_enable will allow the Graft Features menu item to display, but it doesn't appear to do anything. Selecting the item will ask you to open a .prt file, but then nothing happens. Pro/E description of the option is 'Activates "Graft features" button under File menu. This allows user to graft features created in CRI model to active model.'

Apparently, it lets you open future versions in your older version of ProE somehow...

This is a part of PTC capabilities of reading newer Pro/E models with
older Pro/E releases.

My understanding of this option is, that if you are running WF3 and gives
you model to a company using WF2, they can use the GCRI functionality in
WF2 to read in your WF3 model.
If they add features to your model in WF2 and returns the model to you,
you must use the CRI Graft features to incorporate these added features
into your WF3 model. Save you the work of recreating the changes.

Bjarne

I may be missing something.

Just pull up a wildfire 4 model in wildfire 3 added some features to the wildfire 4 model.
I can see the feature tree of the wildfire 4 model, but can not change any of the features except maybe parameters.
When I save the model in wildfire 3 and then bring it back into wildfire 4
I no longer can modify the original wildfire 4 features, but I can modify the wildfire 3 features.
To me this makes sense, as it forces companies to upgrade to the next release.
You could use the feature copy from other model to copy over the new wildfire 3 features to the original wildfire 4 model.

Don,

How does Pro/Intralink handle a situation like that? I know that Pro/I is
just a database management system. It will store older versions of Pro/E
models. But does it start over once you have a Wildfire 4 part? Does it
store a Wildfire 3 part as well?

In light of your question I would think that it would make sense to migrate
the entire part over to Wildfire 4. Is there any particular reason why you
are going back and forth between 3 and 4? Maybe there is a compatibility
problem between end users.

My company has not even seen Wildfire 3. We are stuck on Wildfire 2 and
until there is something that forces our Admin. Guy to load up the latest
version of Pro/E we will not ever be up-to-date. I kind of wonder how many
other companies have a similar approach.
