Upgrading our Thingworx - Need suggestion for a stable higher version.

Hi all,

Our client is running ThingWorx of version 9.3.4. They want to upgrade to higher version.

Previously, when I did the upgradation, we faced various discrepancies related to extensions and mashup widgets. And also after consultation with fellow developers and Thingworx experts, I was suggested not to directly upgrade to the latest available version, but to a stable lower one.

Hence, I am seeking support of this community, and asking to suggest a stable higher version of TWX that you haven't faced any issues after upgrading.

Thank you.

That's a strange question. If anyone had issues, they are probably fixed in a later version, which is why you want the newer one.

It heavily depends on the features of the product you are using, so what issues other people had with a certain version might not be relevant to you (or your customer) at all.

Note there is a known issues section for each version in the Help Center.

Support is the next question - IF you run into issues you want your bugs to be fixed and that is only happening on supported versions. With the std support for a (major) version being 2 years, you will have to update to the newer version you might avoid now anyways, so there is no way around it, the upgrade migration and testing has to be done anyways, it's just a question when you put it on the calendar. You can surely update to a 9.5.8, but it will be out of support this December, then you have to upgrade again.

10.0 was released a while ago now - why don't you go and check with this one and until you are ready, 10.0.1 is released in November and you can quickly check the updates and then go with that one? You will be supported until June '27.

There’s no explicit notion of stable or unstable ThingWorx versions.

However if you prefer playing it safe, you’d want to wait for a few patch releases to be out before upgrading. For example, instead of upgrading to 10.0.0 (F00), you could upgrade to 10.0.1 or 10.0.2, which would have the most obvious bugs fixed.

This applies to any software, not only ThingWorx. It’s the basics of semantic versioning.

I prefer doing it differently though. I suggest start upgrading to the latest version as soon as the F00 is available, and by the time all mashups are tested and extensions are migrated, we’d typically have x.y.1 or x.y.2 already released, and that’s what we’d install.
