Windchill 11.0 Upgrade to 11.1 or 11.2 ?

We are currently running Windchill 11.0 M030 CPS16 and we intend to Upgrade to either WNC 11.1 or WNC 11.2; however we have a difficult decision to make as the decision is around balancing extended support coverage (with WNC 11.1) vs features (with WNC 11.2)...

Can anyone provide any advice for selecting WNC 11.1 or WNC 11.2 as a target release before considering our next upgrade to WNC 12.0 later?

I reviewed this with a PTC rep and they suggested Windchill 11.1 M020 for several reasons:

  • Oddly enough the Product Support is longer for Windchill 11.1 M020 than Windchill 11.2.1.0. You can check the PTC Product Calendar support end dates. Windchill 11.2 only happened because Windchill 12 was delayed and 11.2 was not intended as a long term release.
  • Longer support overlap between support for Windchill 11.1 M020 and Windchill 12 (planned for June 2020) make it easier to migrate while still maintaining support.
  • Java is bundled with Windchill 11.1 M020 but NOT with Windchill 11.2. If you upgrade to Windchill 11.2 it may force you create a license agreement with Oracle to use Java with their new Oracle Java Licensing.
    • Windchill 12 supposed to have an alternative to Oracle Java licensing.

Unless you need a specific Windchill 11.2 Enhancement vs Windchill 11.1 Enhancement, seems like Windchill 11.1 is the way to go.

I'm very interested in 11.2's enhancement to the Save As function.  Here's a clip from the What's New document. Sounds really good but doesn't tell me if you can input part numbers as part of your Save As.  I've had CAD users for years wanting to be able to do this, but I still don't think 11.2 is providing that much flexibility as the new objects are being created from the old ones.

What do you folks think?

Amazon Corretto Open JDK Java version 8 is now supported on Windchill 11.1 M020 CPS10 and 11.2.0.5
