"Accepting" Work Items - what does it do?

I'm wondering if anyone can help me understand what Accepting a work item does with an OOTB set-up, and further what the intended functionality and usage is? Does it change the State of the work item? Is there a way to use this to trigger a State Change on the primary business object?


Nothing jumped out at me from the usual sources, so if anyone is able to point me in the right direction it's most appreciated!

Where an Activity is configured in the WF template to be delivered to multiple users with ANY selected, then when any one user ACCEPTS, all other Work Items are deleted. This is (almost) equivalent to:

- Deliverable a paper request to a pool of workers and the request is in a wire basket visible to all

- One user in the pool grabs the request and agrees to work on it (but hasn't yet); the request is now not visible to the other workers
