Basic Dimensions

When we set basic dimensions to dimensions with multiple quantities (i.e. 2x 5.0), the box is only around the dimension value... is there a way, .dtl or config.pro setting, that will automatically place the box around the quantity and value without using the @[2x 5.0@] workaround?

One of the problems is that either method (inside or outside the box) is valid and both are shown in various pictures in ASME Y14.5m.

Ben is correct in that both methods are now valid. We had to do two things,
created a mapkey that you can use to place the 5x back inside and also
change or checking policy to state that the face of the drawing can not
have both, either all numbers are in the box or out of the box.

Our convention has been, since at least the mid 80's, to use inside and outside the box to indicate the difference between places and spaces.

Places = outside the box
Spaces = inside the box

So you can do this:
4X [3X 6=18]
which means the spacing between the holes is 6 for a total length of 18 and this occurs 4 places on the part.

Can you point to the location in the ISO or ASME standard where this
convention is stated? I've been trying to figure out why pro/e changed this
and so why we should change with it. It would be great if there really was a
convention about inside the box and outside the box.

I didn't mean to indicate that our convention is a codified standard. It's what we do.
