Hello there, I've got a problem I can't get my head around and I hope some of you have got a suggestion for me.
I'm trying to to import a STEP file (an assembly) into Creo and the problem is that all the parts name get changed and doesn't stay the same as per the original file. The get renamed like MG_100000 etc.
Does anyone know how to make Creo to keep the original part name?
Hi,
open STEP in Notepad. Can you find original names in the file?
Hi Martin, yes the step file has names in it.
If that text hightlighted is what the part name is supposed to be, then you have a problem, because that's not a valid file name for Creo. You can't have spaces in file names in Creo.
From the support page about files:
"You cannot use brackets, such as [ ], { }, or ( ), spaces and punctuation marks (.?!;) in file names."
So, the importer probably sees these file names and assigns them new names during the import to comply with these restrictions.
Hi Ken, how I get around this?
I only have this problem with Creo cos other softwares recognise the names and show them correctly...
You can't "get around" illegal characters in a file name.
I don't get that error
It was a quick test to verify you can't use spaces in a filename in Creo.
If you can't create a new file with a space in the name, creo can't import a file with a space (or other special characters) in the name. It will still import, but it has to adjust the name in order to work.
Hi,
is some other software which properly recognizes the names installed on your computer? What software it is?
CATIA v5 or SOLIDWORKS
Hi,
so import STEP into CATIA v5 or SOLIDWORKS & save
-AND-
import/open CATIA v5 or SOLIDWORKS file in Creo.
1) Rename the parts in the originating software before doing the STEP.
2) Edit the STEP file and fix the file names to comply with Creo rules.
3) Import into another CAD system, then open the file directly in Creo, but his may still cause bad filenames as spaces are not allowed.

Hi,
if you need to know the answer to your question, please send STEP file to PTC Support.
I had a similar issue with one of my suppliers and the solution in that case was to ensure the STP file was exported with AP214 format.
